These learners read a text in German that was presented to them through software that offered them annotated translations of key lexicon, a video clip illustrating the lexical item, or both. The results showed that learners did better when they used verbal and visual annotations and that they comprehended the story better when they used their preferred mode of annotation. These two types of learning reported by these authors are the ones under investigation in this study: retention and transfer .
